Install Kitchen countertops

Laminate countertops are about $14 to $18 a linear foot. The material for a tiled countertop is about $10 a linear foot with a lot of labor.

Install Appliances

    Oven

We removed the original 24" wall oven (turquoise!). Keeping the cabinet limited our choices. Not a lot of 24" wall ovens. Micro Chef made a nice one, not expensive, and for about $80 more you can get a double oven. It is almost identical to a Maytag wall oven for several hundred dollars less. Consumer's Reports rates Magic Chef better than Maytag.

    Microwave/Vent-a-hood

The vent hood we removed was 42" wide. All we could find to replace it were either 30" or 36" wide. For not much more, we could get an over-the-oven microwave. Home Depot had a black Magic Chef on sale, which will match the wall oven. We can install the 30" microwave and fill in the rest of the 42" gap with a 6" shelf each side of the microwave for spices or knick-knacks or something.
